Hope for #EndSARS campaign as Osinbajo orders overhaul of police unit
Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday ordered Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris to begin an immediate overhaul of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
In a statement released by Osinbajo’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, the Acting President said,
“Following persistent complaints and reports on the activities of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad that border on allegations of human rights violations, Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, has directed the Inspector General of Police to, with immediate effect, overhaul the management and activities of SARS and ensure that any unit that will emerge from the process will be intelligence-driven and restricted to the prevention and detection of armed robbery and kidnapping, and apprehension of offenders linked to the stated offences, and nothing more.
The Acting President has also directed the IGP to ensure that all operatives in the emerging unit conduct their operations in strict adherence to the rule of law and with due regard to International Human Rights Law and the constitutionally guaranteed rights of suspects.”
This directive has been received with welcome arms across social media where the #EndSARS campaign has prevailed since 2017. Social media users led by Segun Awosanya who tweets as @segalink have consistently called on the government to end the brutality and harassment of innocent Nigerians at the hands of SARS operatives.

While Buhari was away, the acting president, Professor Yemi Osinbajo
1. Sacked the DG of DSS, Daura
2. He has also ordered for the overhaul of the Special Anti Robbery Squad unit. #EndSARS
I think Buhari should just continue his holiday till we have a bearing.

As Acting President.
First he sacked the DSS Boss for the invasion of National Assembly.
Now ordered for the overhaul of SARS with immediate effect.
2weeks, 2 Great Actions… 👏👏 #EndSARS

I commend @ProfOsinbajo for responding to Nigerians’ clamour over SARS, however, I don’t believe an overhaul is what is required. You shouldn’t overhaul what has become a vehicle for oppressing Nigerians. I call on the VP to #EndSARS and return its officers to core police duties

With this #ENDSARS victory, Segalink has laid a blueprint overhauling oppressive structures in Nigeria using social media activism.
Now that we know “these things are possible”, what is our next target please? 😂
